People who travel to Spain in order to find a job or simply to buy a property often question what a NIE actually is. The NIE is the <em><strong>\u201cNumero de Identificacion de Extranjero\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. Therefore, it is an identification number for everyone in Spain who is not a Spanish citizen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What do you need a NIE for? <\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To buy a house <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paying taxes in Spain <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening a bank account in Spain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studying in Spain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting a Spanish driver\u2019s licence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get a job <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buying\u00a0a car <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To apply for a mortgage or other loan in Spain <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Register for national Social Security Health plan <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To set up a company, start a business or simply work in Spain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To register with social services<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What are the different types of NIE?<\/h2>\n<h4><strong>1. NIE NUMBER <i>(Numero de identidad de extranjero)<\/i><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NIE number is a number written on a <\/span><b>white piece of paper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This number <\/span><b>is not proof of residency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is assigned for administrative purposes such as purchasing property, investments and tax payment. To apply you need to fill out the <\/span><b>EX15 form.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. NIE CARD <i>(Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Union)<\/i><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This NIE card is normally a little green laminated paper card. This contains your NIE number along with your name, date, and birthplace, address in Spain and the date of application. It is required when one is staying in Spain for more than 3 months. The NIE application is only possible when in person and by appointment. An NIE card is only awarded when you meet the following conditions: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a job for a Spanish employer <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be self-employed <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a student and have health insurance <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have enough funds to maintain yourself and to have valid health insurance in Spain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join a family member already living in Spain <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The validity of NIE Card is unlimited. To apply for this card you need to fill out the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub.edu\/uri\/Documents\/ex18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>EX18 form<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to apply for the different types of NIE<\/b><\/h2>\n<h4><strong>NIE NUMBER&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Step 1: fill out the application form<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU citizens:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the application form that you need to fill out is called the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/extranjeros.mitramiss.gob.es\/es\/modelossolicitudes\/Mod_solicitudes2\/18-Certificado_residencia_comunitaria_FEB19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>EX-18 Solicitud de\u00a0inscription\u00a0en el Registro Central de Extranjeros_Residencia Ciudadano de la UE<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-EU Citizens:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the application form that you need to fill out is called the <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/extranjeros.mitramiss.gob.es\/es\/modelossolicitudes\/Mod_solicitudes2\/15-Formulario_NIE_y_certificados_FEB19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EX 15 Solicitud de Numero de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) y Certificados<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, you will have to pay for the NIE at a nearby bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>S<strong>tep 2: <a href=\"https:\/\/sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es\/icpplustieb\/citar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Make an appointment online<\/a> (it is not a walk-in service!)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You MUST<strong> bring your printed appointment confirmation<\/strong> on the day. Book in advance as it is very busy and you may have to wait a few months to get an appointment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>They make it very difficult for you to get the appointment. There are only so many a day and they book a visit for you in an office \u00a01-2 hours away from Barcelona. We know many people who went far away and when you get there they sent you home again because you dont have the correct documents with you.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Step 3: Prepare all of the documents<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>EU Citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you will need: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your passport and a photocopy<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of address in Spain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completed <\/span>EX18 form<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of health insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A document proving why you need a Spanish NIE number such as: a contract showing that you are going to buy property in Spain, a job contract, proof that you own a company, a person with sufficient funds who can live in Spain without working, acceptance letter from a school plus proof of payment to the school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Important\u00a0piece of information regarding all you need to know about an NIE in Spain&#8230; Any documents must be translated into Spanish or Catalan, unless they are official EU documents. Even if they have been translated, remember to bring the original document!<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Non-EU<\/b> <b>Citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you will need: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your passport, Visa, and photocopies<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A completed <\/span>EX15 form<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><i>Empadronamiento <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a proof of registration in your local community). If you do not have one of these you will need to go to your town hall and register yourself as living in the area<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of legal entry into Spain such as a landing card <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of health insurance <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 passport size photos <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A document proving why you need a Spanish NIE number such as: a contract showing that you are going to buy property in Spain, a job contract, proof that you own a company, a person with sufficient funds who can live in Spain without working, acceptance letter from a school plus proof of payment to the school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Any documents must be translated into Spanish or Catalan, remember to bring the original document!<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don&#8217;t want to do this process, and you are renting or buying an apartment from Casamona, we can help you get your NIE for around 200 euros- \u00a0<a href=\"casamona@casamona.com\">Email us<\/a> for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>You can also apply for an NIE abroad via a Spanish Consulate or Embassy<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>EU citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produce your passport and a photocopy of the <\/span>photo page and the page with your details<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Non-EU citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you must: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produce a valid passport and a photocopy of the <\/span>entire passport<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any applicant must bring two copies of the relevant application form. However, do not sign the form as you need to be in the presence of a consular official. You must also pay a small administration fee and this amount can vary (anything between \u00a38-\u00a325 in the UK for example).
