El Raval: General Description
El Raval is the third zone of the Ciutat Vella, along with El Born and El Gótico. Adjectives that come to mind when thinking or El Raval are ‘lively’, ‘vibrant’ and ‘authentic’, it is also one of the most culturally diverse areas of Barcelona. As is common in the old town of Barcelona, the streets are narrow and twisting adding to the medieval feel of the area. El Raval has gained a bad reputation with locals due to a few roads at night which should be avoided, however one mustn’t let this become a reason for missing one of the most dynamic areas of Barcelona. Like any other area of any other city, stay aware and you will not run into any danger or unpleasantness. El Raval is a hugely underestimated area of Barcelona with low house prices and brimming with culture and gastronomic delights!
El Raval is very central so it is accessible by foot and walking is one of the best ways to explore this area. There are also metro stops on the L3 and L2 lines so one can travel through the city really easily.
What to do
Art plays a big part in the atmosphere of El Raval with many independent artist studios and galleries, but also the MACBA (Musuem of Modern Art) on your doorstep. The streets are packed with one-off boutiques and vintage shops, where one can find any manner of things.
Where to eat
El Raval is enhanced by the small and unique bars and restaurants one can find such as Palo Santo Tapas Bar, Arume, Betty Ford’s Cocktails and Casa Almirall. El Raval is also bordered by two huge food markets: La Boqueria and Sant Antoni Market so if a sit-down meal is not on the cards then you can pick up a quick, delicious bite in one of those traditional markets.
